Dear Assemblymember Wagner:
[ I am Chinese-American / Asian-American and ]
I am writing to express my support of Assembly Bill 376,
Relating to Shark Fins. AB 376 would ban the sale,
possesion, trade, and distribution of shark fins
througout the State.
Sharks are critical to the balance of oceanic
ecosystems, and are vital to the health of our oceans
and our planet. However, the unsustainable trade in
shark fins has decimated shark populations worldwide,
pushing many shark species to the brink of extinction.
Up to 73 million sharks are killed annually, mostly for
their fins.
The State of Hawai'i, the Commonwealth of the
Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI), Guam, and the State
of Washington have all passed similar legislation, and
California now has the opportunity to be a leader as
among the first in the continental United States to
adopt a similar approach to shark conservation.
California is one of the largest sources of demand for
shark fin outside Asia and is a major entry for shark
fin distribution in the United States. This passage of
this bill would represent a significant step towards
reducing pressure on rapidly declining shark populations.
