 Mail The City Council - sample e-mail text . . .

You can keep your note to the Mayor or your Councillor simple; simply include your name and address (so they know you're one of their voters), and indicate that you want him/her to support the shark fin ban.

If you want to write something more substantive, feel free to draw from this sample message:

Dear Mayor/Councillor ______________:

I am writing to express my support of the ban on the sale, possession, and consumption of shark fins in the City of Toronto.

Sharks are critical to the balance of oceanic ecosystems, and are vital to the health of our oceans and our planet. However, the unsustainable trade in shark fins has decimated shark populations worldwide, pushing many shark species to the brink of extinction. Up to 73 million sharks are killed annually, mostly for their fins.

The State of Hawai'i, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI), Guam, and the States of Washington, Oregon, and California have all passed similar legislation, and Toronto now has the opportunity to be a leader as the largest Municipality in Canada to adopt a similar approach to shark conservation.

This passage of this bylaw would represent a significant step towards reducing pressure on rapidly declining shark populations.
