Celebrate and Protect our Ocean . . .
Friday, 04 June 2010 ------------------------------------- Contents: - World Oceans Day - eBay Fundraising Tournament - Northwest Dive & Travel Show - Offshore Spilling - New Interns ------------------------------------- Hello, fellow ocean lovers! World Oceans Day is nearly upon us again. You might recall that last year's was the first World Oceans Day officially recognized by the United Nations, but people have been celebrating World Ocean Day around the world informally for almost two decades. . . . And as many of you already know, we started celebrating it here in the San Francisco Bay Area three years ago. Our fourth year of events has us celebrating in San Francisco as well as in Monterey. Join us at a shark and ocean celebration hosted by our friend David McGuire and Sea Stewards on Saturday, 05 June 2010, from 5:00-7:00pm at the Sports Basement in the Presidio (across from Crissy Field) in San Francisco. From 3:00-4:30, there will also be a beach cleanup and shark "sandcastle" building contest at the Crissy Field beach. If you're closer to Central California, come join us at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, where we'll be celebrating all weekend. COARE will have a display at the Aquarium, so be sure to stop by and say hello. The celebration will take place on Saturday and Sunday, 05-06 June 2010, and runs from 9:30am to 6:00pm both days. If you live elsewhere, you may be able to find WOD events almost anywhere in the world by visiting http://www.theoceanproject.org/wod/2010events.php --- - eBay Fundraising Tournament --- Last month, we announced our participation in eBay's "Humanity Calls" fundraising tournament. It's still taking place, and ends on 22 June - so, there is just a little more than two weeks left. If you haven't already voted for us, please do so. Similar to other contests, we need to gather as many votes as possible. You can vote using your Facebook, Twitter, or Humanity Calls website login. If you have all three, you can tally votes using each one! And to make things more interesting, eBay is weighing more heavily votes cast or donations made during these closing two weeks. In addition to voting, we're hoping that you'll also help us encourage other people to vote too. Please share this with your friends, tweet it, and add it to your Facebook status. Here is the link that will take you directly to the voting page: http://humanitycalls.org/HumanityCalls/OrganizationProfileView.action?id=176 --- - Northwest Dive & Travel Expo --- This was our first year exhibiting at the Northwest Dive and Travel Expo, and we enjoyed it thoroughly. We met some wonderful new people, and warmly welcome our new subscribers. As a result of a successful show, we've made some new connections, and you can look forward to exciting new developments in the months to come. --- - Offshore Spilling --- You may recall that our Executive Director, Christopher Chin, spoke before the US Secretary of the Interior in April of 2009, discouraging additional offshore drilling leases, and warning of accidents. When he spoke of the unpredictable and catastrophic nature of accidents, he made reference to events like Three Mile Island, Chernobyl, and Exxon Valdez, but some critics (mostly from the Petroleum Industry) criticized these comments as hyperbole. We didn't think so then, and we certainly don't think so now - now that 14,000-20,000 barrels of oil are pouring into the Gulf of Mexico each day. Since the spill began on 20 April, we've already seen the equivalent of four (4) Exxon Valdez spills, and experts expect this to continue well into August, by which time this spill will be eleven (11) times worse than the Exxon Valdez disaster in 1989. Does anyone still think that offshore drilling is a good idea? --- - New interns --- Despite the depressing news of the oil spill and its far reaching affects, we still have much to celebrate here at COARE. Among the things that we're most pleased about are the new additions to our staff. Last month we had three wonderful new interns join us: Tanya Graham and Hartley Parish both came on board as Program Assistants, and Zachary Caine is assisting us with Communications. Look for great things from these people; they're all bright, passionate, and embody the values we have here at COARE. --- Please feel free to share this newsletter with friends, family, and colleagues. If you received this newsletter second hand, we encourage you to subscribe directly by visiting http://coare.org/subscribe Wishing you healthy oceans, - Your friends at COARE ========================== P.S.: We encourage you to add info@coare.org to your addressbook to facilitate delivery of our newsletter to your inbox.
